Job Description

The interdisciplinary graduate-level Museum Studies Program invites applications for a full-time lecturer who will serve as program director to begin September 2025. The successful applicant will teach graduate courses in museum operations, education and interpretation, advise museum education master?s students and museum studies certificate students, and supervise part-time museum studies faculty members. The director will guide program planning, new course development, participate in marketing and student recruitment, and maintain and evolve relationships with outside organizations and partner universities. The director will work closely with the departments of History of Art and Architecture, History, Education, and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts to make sure that the program aligns with their students? needs and interests. The workload consists of a combination of teaching and service (program administration and student advising) obligations equivalent to six courses per academic year. The director should also be prepared to teach across different modalities (in person, online) and schedules (evenings, weekends) to meet the needs of working museum professionals.

This position requires a master?s degree (minimum) or a doctoral degree (preferred) in a discipline that supports museum work, or a degree in museology or non-profit administration. Applicants must show a strong commitment to preparing students to help museums transform to serve a changing world.  

Candidates are expected to have museum work experience relating to visitor engagement and a broad understanding of issues, operations, and opportunities in American museums of all types, including art, history, science, natural history and children?s museums, as well as aquariums, zoos, and botanical gardens. The ideal candidate will be proficient in informal learning theory and methodology, social justice strategies, museum work experience, and experience in building community relationships. Candidates should be well-versed in museum-generated literature and academic literature and should have higher education teaching experience. Experience developing and implementing new curricula, with openness to exploring and integrating new modalities for course delivery, such as digital learning platforms, hybrid programs, and experiential learning methods preferred.

The ideal candidate will be curious and enthusiastic, with excellent verbal and written communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, cross-cultural competence, and a demonstrated ability to work independently.
