Why does the job exist?

The Mexican Wolf Biologist position will be assigned to perform a wide variety of tasks, including wolf captures and handling, cross-fostering wolf pups, collects biological data in the field, contacting affected stake holders, investigating wolf reports, mitigating wolf depredation on livestock and monitor wolf populations in New Mexico.

How does it get done?

Works on the Mexican Wolf lnteragency Field Team (FTL) under the supervision of the Department's Mexican Wolf Field Team Leader to coordinate and implement the dally execution of field activities and associated collection of biological data and management of Mexican wolves in New Mexico per protocol and policy. Oversees and performs capture and release monitoring. Conducts aerial telemetry in fixed winged aircraft as needed for population surveys and will fly in a helicopter to perform survey and capture operations.

Writes a variety of complex correspondence, reports, and project summaries under the direction of the FTL, using technical knowledge and expertise. Enters data into a computer database, manages database and checks for accuracy and completeness. Utilizes GIS software to display and analyze spatial data. Oversees maintenance of project field and office equipment in safe working order.

The position will assist the Department's Mexican Wolf FTL in developing operational recommendations, completing required reports, meeting project deadlines and training wolf team personnel in approved project protocols and techniques. Leads field implementation including collection of biological data and performs or oversees accompanying data entry/analysis and data management. Assisting in resolving problems related to conflicts between wolves and livestock, including using proactive measures to reduce depredation.

Landowners throughout southwestern New Mexico. Other Department of Game and Fish staff, including biologists, district officers and administrators. Cooperating staff from other state or federal agencies.

Ideal Candidate

The preferred candidate will possess a Bachelor's degree in biology, fisheries science/management, wildlife science/management, animal science, forestry, ecology or similar related natural resource degree and at least two (2) years of experience in the specified fields. This position will work with multiple stakeholders in the success of the Mexican Wolf Program, requiring overnight travel and working in inclement conditions.

Minimum Qualification

Bachelor's degree in biology, fisheries science/management, wildlife science/management, animal science, forestry, ecology, or similar related natural resource degree and two (2) years directly related work experience. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) years may substitute for the required education and experience.

Employment Requirements

Pre-employment background investigation is required and is conditional pending results. Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment.

Working Conditions

This job requires both office work and field work. Office work - normal indoor environment with continuous sitting, significant amounts of time using a computer and talking on the phone. Field work - normal outdoor environment including exposure to sun, wind, rain, snow and biting insects. Must be able to operate a 4x4 vehicle, operate an off highway vehicle and pull trailers loaded with equipment and supplies. The ability to lift and carry heavy objects (up to 80 pounds and sometimes more) is required. Occasional overnight travel is required. Occasional weekend or evening work is required. The ability to work outside in inclement weather (hot, cold, rain, snow, etc.) is required. The ability to travel on horseback, helicopter, fixed-wing aircraft, ATV's, or snowmobiles. Specific tool use may include GPS, GIS, radio telemetry, cameras, spotting scopes, binoculars, other ocular and environmental measuring instruments, capture equipment such as netguns, dart guns, and laboratory items such as centrifuges, syringes, scalpels, microscopes, slides, stethoscopes, thermometers, scissors, and standard construction tools such as drills, saws, hammers, shovels, wrenches, axes, and chainsaws.
