Job Description
SCOPE
The Mill Biochemist works alongside the production team in order to maximize safety, quality and production. The Mill Chemist and their Assistants are directly responsible for the management of all chemical systems.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (Other duties may be assigned)
The Mill Biochemist's primary responsibilities as part of the mill operational team include, but are not limited to:
- Maintaining safety standards in the chemical areas
- Maintaining chemical inventories
- Maintaining chemical delivery systems and spares
- Determining, reporting and optimizing chemical costs
- Designing and running trials
- Designing and installing new chemical equipment
- Managing the day-to-day operations of the biocide and water systems
- Testing stock/water system and adjusting chemical programs
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE The educational requirements are four (4) year Bachelor of Science in Pulp and Paper Science,
Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
The experience requirements are two years of Paper Mill experience or Chemical Technical Service.
Prior management of a Paper Mill Biocide program is preferred.
LANGUAGE SKILLS The candidate must speak and write English at a college level.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS The candidate must be able to solve college level mathematical equations. The candidate must be able to use college level algebra, geometry and calculus to solve problems in the mill.
REASONING ABILITY The candidate must be able to use knowledge of papermaking and papermaking chemistry to solve process, equipment and quality problems.

Vision requirements include: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
This position will require working an on-call rotation schedule within the chemical department
WORK ENVIRONMEN T 65% of all work will be on the production floor in a hot environment. As this is a production environment with multiple motors this will be a high noise environment. Hearing protection is required.
This position will require working with hazardous chemicals on a daily basis.
