Job Summary

Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) seeks an On-Call Museum Educator to join the RISD Museum.

On-Call Educators for RISD Museum work with a range of audiences (Academic and Public Programs, Family and Teen Programs, School and Teacher Programs, etc.) to teach in a range of existing programs and formats, and customize experiences for various ages, backgrounds, and interests. The successful candidate will demonstrate enthusiasm for art and art-making and familiarity with facilitating conversations, and will also recognize and value diversity as central to excellence.

Essential Functions:

  • Facilitate programs focusing on art and design from across cultures and time periods in the Museum galleries and gathering spaces.

  • Prepare materials for education programs.

  • Research works of art and other topics related to programs.

  • Work closely with museum education staff and other external partners (as required) to customize and develop facilitated programs based on audience and program type.

Required Knowledge/Skills/Experience:

  • BA in teaching or art-related field, and knowledge of art history.

  • Experience teaching K-12 students, college students, and/or adults.

  • Proven ability to effectively interact with both internal and external members of the community representing diverse ages, backgrounds, and interests.

  • Strong interpersonal and research skills, verbal communication, creativity, flexibility, sense of humor, broad cultural experiences and personal warmth are essential.

  • Fluent communication in English necessary.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs such as Word and Excel and other computer-based software.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Academic background in art history, studio art, humanities, or education

  • Previous studio art or creative hands-on experience
