Job Description

Position Summary:

The Peer Support Specialist is a vital member of the care team, using their lived experience with mental health and/or substance use recovery to support, mentor, and guide individuals toward wellness. This position combines professional training with personal experience to provide non-clinical, strengths-based, and recovery-oriented support.

The Peer Support Specialist works collaboratively with clients and care teams to foster empowerment, encourage self-advocacy, and support individuals in achieving their recovery and wellness goals.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Establish positive, supportive relationships with clients based on mutual respect and shared lived experience.
  • Serve as a role model of recovery, offering hope, inspiration, and practical tools for self-management and empowerment.
  • Assist individuals in setting and achieving recovery goals, including housing, employment, education, health, and community involvement.
  • Facilitate or co-facilitate peer-led support groups, workshops activities.
  • Support clients in navigating behavioral health systems and accessing appropriate services and community resources.
  • Collaborate with clinical and support staff to ensure coordinated, person-centered care.
  • Provide recovery coaching, advocacy, and mentorship in a variety of settings, including individual sessions and group formats.
  • Maintain accurate documentation in compliance with agency policies and confidentiality regulations (e.g., HIPAA).
  • Participate in staff meetings, supervision, and required training sessions.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in psychology, social work, human services, or a related field is required.
  • Personal lived experience with mental health and/or substance use challenges and demonstrated recovery for at least 1–2 years.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and active listening skills.
  • Ability to maintain professional boundaries and model ethical behavior.
  • Commitment to recovery-oriented, trauma-informed, and person-centered care.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and electronic health records (EHR) or willingness to learn.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certified Peer Specialist, Recovery Coach, or similar credential.
  • Experience working in behavioral health or substance use settings.

Additional Requirements:

  • Must pass background check and drug screening, as applicable.
  • Reliable transportation and valid driver’s license may be required, depending on job duties.

Work Environment:

  • Combination of office, community, and field-based work.
  • May require occasional evenings or weekend hours.
  • Exposure to emotionally intense situations is possible.
