Job Description

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Director of Communications will play a key role in enhancing and protecting the reputation of NBME and its brands among stakeholders, employees, the media and the public. This role is responsible for leading the Communications team, serving as a Communications subject matter expert and managing all communications plans and activities: external strategic and corporate communications, crisis communications, media relations and internal communication.

This role has been designated as remote, meaning it requires little to no onsite attendance. While this role can be designated as remote, you are offered the flexibility to select if you prefer to work primarily remotely, hybrid, or onsite. We're open to considering candidates within 50 miles of our office location in Philadelphia, PA.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop strategic communications plans to evolve and protect NBME and its brands and to enable NBME to achieve its organizational goals
  • Direct all external and internal communications activities including crisis communications, social media and media relations
  • Responsible for managing and developing an effective vendor relationship with NBME's PR agency and any future communications consultants and temporary resources
  • Serve as the primary interface for communications office for public and media inquiries, triaging inquiries as appropriate
  • Lead on visioning and long-term strategy to build communications infrastructure and capabilities needed to achieve organizational goals over time
  • Draft and issues public statements on behalf of NBME such as press release
  • Produce NBME institutional publications (e.g., quarterly impact report)
  • Oversees management of the intranet homepage and the Marketing and Strategic Communications intranet microsite
  • Provides support to other units for program specific publications; works with Legal Services in overseeing approval of copyright notices for institutional publications
  • Oversees maintenance of and advises staff on adherence to NBME's editorial standards
  • Provides supervision of and supports growth for relevant team members
  • Performs other duties as required

QUALIFICATIONS

Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrate ability to build strategic communications plans to serve organizational goals
  • Able to be proactive vs. reactive
  • Must have a thorough working knowledge of generally accepted business practices for the profession of public relations, crisis and communication planning, and media relations
  • Excellent communication skills, including writing, editing, proof reading, and speaking
  • Demonstrated ability to think and act strategically
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound business judgment
  • Proficient computer skills relevant to Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks with attention to details
  • Flexible, able to adapt to change

Experience

  • At least 7 years of experience in a mid-size organization or agency setting leading strategic and integrated consumer brand public relations programs
  • Healthcare experience is preferred

Education

Requires a BA/BS in communications, journalism or public relations; or any combination of education and experience, which would provide an equivalent background

Compensation we are offering for this position ranges $139,394 to $160,000/yr. Please note that the offered rate for this position typically aligns with the minimum to midrange of this position, but it can vary based on the successful candidate's qualifications and experience, department budget, and an internal equity review .
